What will TONIGHT bring?!

I’m holding my breath, wondering what is in store for me tonight.

I anticipate and look forward to any moment with my baby… even the kind I’m going to describe below I suppose…

Kaleb has been struggling lately with getting appropriate naps, and hasn’t had many, if any during the day. That means, by the time I pick him up from daycare, he’s shot, fussy, easily angered and can flare into temper tantrums. But of course adorable and slap happy and easily made to squeal and giggle. Due to him not getting his naps, my plan of action has been to feed him, and get him to bed a little earlier, as he is rubbing his eyes and definitely ready to sleep. Unfortunately, my plan of action has been thwarted several times.

The other night, I had him in his high chair, and was feeding him. (This in itself is an adventure, which requires a lot of clean up afterwards on a REGULAR feeding). He throws food everywhere, has it all over the place, but this time, there was a lot of poop involved. Yes, gross disgusting poop, and lots of it. Somehow the diaper had slid over, so when he grunted and did his funny poop faces, out it came onto the high chair seat, instead of in the diaper. I didn’t realize that of course, until my hand was holding a ton of it, and Kaleb’s hand was pulling it up and headed for his mouth. Talk about fast action to save my baby from eating poop! But I was covered in it, and so was he. So, instead of getting to bed early, Kaleb was in the bathtub, and after he was finally in bed at his regular time, I was spending forever trying to clean poop off all the crevices in the high chair (more funny stories about that just in itself…), but my night was shot cleaning poop, and I was gross and slimy myself.

Then last night, Kaleb had again not napped at daycare, and was extremely tired. So, after our walk I placed him in the highchair for an earlier feeding and earlier bedtime. Another adventure of feeding him, huge mess everywhere as usual. I picked him up, washed his hands and face, and off we went to head upstairs to start the bedtime routine, and get to bed a little early. NOT. As soon as I hit the stairs, Kaleb upchucked every single thing he had eaten, some digested, some not. Kaleb was COVERED in thick slime, as was I, as was the carpet on 3 stairs. I quickly turned him towards me so dripping throw up wouldn’t cover more of our carpeted stairs, jumped over what I could, and got Kaleb in the sink where it was yet another adventure trying to clean both of us up, while he squirmed and fought, and smeared the nasty stuff wherever I had just cleaned it up.

Once he was yet again bathed and lotioned (something we only do 1x a week, except this week, when it’s been every single night for some reason) and in bed, I had to go attempt to clean up the gallons of throw up all over our new carpeted stairs. It stunk. It wouldn’t all come up, and I felt very inept at cleaning. Not to mention I had to leave to go visit a lady in my church in a few minutes, was covered in slime myself, and hadn’t eaten, and was worried that my little guy was sick, hungry, and needed something calming in his stomach. So, after I got up most of the juice, pulled out the carpet cleaner that we hadn’t figured out how to use yet to see if Larry could work on it while I left for a few hours… I took a bottle up to go feed Kaleb, knowing he had nothing in his little tummy, and a long night ahead of him. By the time I opened his door, he was sound asleep, even though I had forgotten in my haste to turn on his white noise machine and close the blinds… poor little dear!

So, our track record this week has not been good: no naps, no early bedtimes to make up for it, and nasty adventures, where I find myself staring at my hands (or other body parts) covered in poop, throw up, mucus/slime, or other disgusting bodily discharges and realizing how much I love my little guy, as I’m not even retching myself as I would have been with that nasty stuff all over me…

So, I’m sure you will appreciate that there are no pictures in this post… :) The images themselves should do the trick :P

And as I said at the beginning, I’m anxiously awaiting what will happen tonight…

Bad mom in the making

I'm an even worse slacker on the blog now that I gave in, and post pics on facebook (man, talk about an easy place to just upload pics for all the family to see!) I don't even have to write a story or anything to go with the pictures! Anyway, I digress, as I lamely give an excuse for why I'm not writing on the blog...

Kaleb is growing so fast, it's incredible. I think the first 5 months or so, I saw him develop, but nothing as fast as he has the last few months. He is now a little boy: mobile, personality, desires, dislikes, etc. Easier in some ways (he started sleeping through the night the day he turned 8 months!!!!!) and harder in others (requiring more entertainment, redirection- all while keeping your eyes safe and clear from dangerous little hands!! LOL)

So, yesterday, instead of going for our regular walk after work/daycare, I decided due to the pouring rain, and both of our nasty coughs, we should stay indoors. Which meant he needed entertainment while I tried to cook something for dinner. At one point, I was carrying him into the kitchen, as I needed to open the hot oven, so I quickly grabbed the first thing handy that looked ok for 1 minutes worth of entertainment to hand Kaleb, while I opened the oven door. (Here is where stupidity becomes blatant, just in case you don't notice).

I grabbed daddy's Zyrtec bottle, which rattled quite nicely, and had a childproof lid on it and handed it to him, while placing him on the floor. Turned around to open the oven, and heard a gulp. I immediately turned around to see pills all over the floor, Kaleb holding the bottle in one hand with the lid off. The gulp I heard made me think he had probably placed one or more of those pills in his mouth and swallowed, so I freaked.

I grabbed the bottle, quickly grabbed the pills lying on the floor, picked him up, and tried to open his mouth. As you probably would guess, since I wanted to see in his mouth, he kept it tightly closed, so I did a finger sweep and found nothing. Called the poison control people, wondering if I was going to spend another long night in the ER waiting to get his stomach pumped or something... and of course freaking out that I just killed my baby with my stupidity!

The lady who helped me was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO nice, reassuring, and went through things with me. Kaleb didn't have any white residue in his mouth, so most likely I was freaking out over nothing, but just in case... she calmed my worries about what it could do to him, how many he could handle per pound, side effects, etc. Apparently, other than dry mouth, if he had actually gotten any down him, he'd be a little cranky and sleepy. And mind you, he is ALWAYS cranky and sleepy by this time of the day, so there was nothing really to watch for. But, they still followed up, and gave me info. Thankfully talking to them eased my worries about Kaleb dying or having to go to the ER for yet another dreadful trip. But, meanwhile, I was left with the distinct impression that I had acted so inanely stupidly it hit moron status. Handing my own baby a bottle of pills?!?!?! Sheesh... I'm going to be reported now for actually admitting this now, right? :)
